January 2013 Holidays, Observances, and Awareness Dates: Plan Your Promotions!

Now that the craziness of the December holidays is settling down, it’s time to ring in a new year and get started on some January promotions. Good, bad, indifferent – it doesn’t matter how your promotions and campaigns went in 2012; it’s time to look forward to a new year of possibilities.

In addition to the new year, January also has the inauguration of the President of the United States. This normally happens on the 20th, but since that falls on a Sunday this year the actual swearing-in ceremony doesn’t happen until Monday the 21st. So if you’ve been sitting on any patriotic-themed promos from the summer or the election season, this is a perfect opportunity to pass them out.

What else is happening in January? We’re so glad that you asked!

Admittedly, there isn’t a ton happening in January, so you might find it best to focus on winter-specific promotional items this month. Some areas are lucky enough not to get a lot of snow or get too cold during the winter. But for the rest of us, companies can score lots of brand impressions by handing out ice scrapers, scarfs, or blankets.

Even better? Opt for a mug. Not only are mugs necessary for sipping warm cocoa in the winter, but you can tie it in to a month-long Hot Tea and/or Oatmeal appreciation bash. Hand out some logo mugs to your staff or customers, add some packets of tea or oatmeal, and gather around the computer to read one of the blog squad’s favorite web comics. (Please note: many of the comics contain strong/coarse language.)

If hot tea and oatmeal aren’t your favorites, then perhaps writing strikes your fancy. As January is International Creativity Month and hosts Universal Letter Writing Week, notebooks would make excellent giveaway items this month.

In fact, do one better! Celebrate Thank Your Customers Week by having your sales team write letters to their VIP customers. And if your business is small enough, you could even pass out custom notebooks, personalized pens, or other branded items to anyone who visits your store or office that week!

Now it’s time for a fun fact about January! Did you know that in January of 1888, Marvin Stone patented the first drinking straw? I think we can all agree that the drinking straws are a pretty big deal; without them acrylic tumblers would cease to exist and waiters wouldn’t have anything to give you every fifteen minutes. Sharing this fun fact (and maybe a sweet branded tumbler) with your potential clients would be an awesome way to break the ice!

    FESTIVAL OF SLEEP DAY?!?

I don’t know about any of y’all, but I’d much rather observe this holiday than New Year’s Day.

    Reform must be made!

    Write your congressman!

Heh, I also wouldn’t mind a sleeping day. Sleeping in is always glorious. Though, Festival of Sleep Day isn’t all that well known, apparently. It doesn’t even have a Wikipedia entry! Otherwise, it doesn’t look like there’s anything TOO weird or outrageous in January.

These are some pretty good merchandise ideas, Mandy. These all go really well with the winter months and the listed observances, and would really help with some marketing synergy. As always, these monthly awareness posts are full of fun information and great suggestions. Thanks, Mandy!

With the winter months and Festival of Sleep Day, fleece blankets would certainly be a welcome promo item for just about anyone. :)

I agree with Eric, Festival of Sleep Day sounds amazing. I also love that January is International Creativity Month! That’s a fun excuse to do something, well, creative — and for businesses to venture out of the box for promo ideas.

And I somehow managed to forget that the inauguration was this month, too. What’s this talk of “there isn’t a ton happening in January”??? Sounds like a pretty awesome month to me. :)

    • Mandy Kilinskis

Well, after all of the holidays happening in December, January is definitely a little more low key. Don’t get me wrong, the inauguration is important – it just doesn’t lend itself to promotions quite like the holidays do.

    January 25: Amy’s birthday

I will gladly accept any promo items related to robots, LEGOs, penguins or shoes :)

    • Mandy Kilinskis

And we shall all be on the lookout! :) Happy early birthday, Amy!

      • Eric

Any and all Americana themed or related items will be likewise accepted on my birthday, the 28th. :)

Festival of Sleep Day? That’s kind of an oxymoron, not very festive is everyone is asleep, but I like their thinking any way!
