July 2012 Holidays, Observances, and Awareness Dates: Plan Your Promotions!

It’s almost July, which means that summer picnics, festivals, and events are in full swing. And while it might be harder to schedule meetings around clients’ vacations, you also have plenty of chances to promote your brand or business.

Summer means tons of parades, county fairs, and other community events. So spread your brand name in style. Promotional products are a staple of summertime activities, and they’re a perfect way to get your logo into potential customers’ hands.

Decided to march in a parade or sponsor a float? Then make sure that your employees and fans are decked out with branded t-shirts. If you don’t want to be the center of attention but still want a presence at the parade, consider passing out pinwheels or whistles.

Let’s take a look at what else is happening in July (click to enlarge):

The single biggest promotional opportunity this month (at least for US citizens) is the Fourth of July. There will be so many community events the weekend before and the day of the 4th, that there’s no shortage of ways to get promote your company. As long as your giveaway items feature a flag or are red, white, and/or blue, you just can’t go wrong.

It’s no surprise that July is the national picnic, hot dog, and ice cream month; everyone wants to enjoy the warm weather and some good food. Baseball Helmet Ice Cream Bowls make awesome additions to any picnic or ice cream social, and they make a great take-home item.

While independent stores get lots of focus on Small Business Saturday, you can also leverage the equally-important National Independent Retailers Week to market your store. Pass out custom tote bags or pens at your store, or band together with other local shops and restaurants to throw a week-long bash. For a promotion that will really make an impact, hold the event on Get to Know Your Customers Day.

It’s so weird that the Fourth is on a Wednesday this year! I guess it’ll be a great break in the week at least :) Mmm, can’t wait to celebrate it properly with a bowl of chocolate marshmallow ice cream and a Chicago style hot dog!! Thanks, Mandy for such an informative post!!

There’s a lot of interesting ones on there I haven’t heard of. I really like the Get to Know Your Customers Day. I wonder how many companies take advantage of reaching out to their customers on those days to get feedback.

Also, everyone celebrates the 4th of July by watching Independence Day. Even in other countries. GO AMURCA!

I wonder that, too. I read a study recently that customers really want to give feedback, but 80% of them don’t think that the stores listen to that feedback. So taking advantage of a day like Get to Know Your Customers Day would definitely be great for breaking down barriers and letting your customers know that you will actually take that feedback into consideration.

And heck yes, Independence Day! :D

I have to say, July isn’t a very healthy month…it’s hot dog and ice cream month, plus there is a french fry and cheese cake day! I’d better invest in some stretchy pants, lol :) Thanks for the run down Mandy.

Haha, you’re right, Jen. July really isn’t that healthy. Maybe we should all celebrate Anti-Boredom Month by taking up jogging. That might combat all of the hot dogs and ice cream. ;)

  4. Rachel

Oh my goodness, so many food-related holidays in July! This is both awesome and really bad, haha. And it looks like on July 13th I should be prepared to eat French fries while watching all my favorite geeky TV shows and movies … :)

    • Mandy Kilinskis

No kidding! Maybe companies should hand out first aid kits with antacids in them for their customers that want to indulge in all of these delicious days!

Eating French fries while watching geeky TV and movies sounds like an excellent way to spend July 13th!

  5. Jill Tooley

I’m going to be celebrating my geekness with some French fries! :D

    Nice writeup, Mandy.

    July 4-10. Freedom Week.

    That’s where I live. :)
