May 2012 Holidays, Observances, and Awareness Dates: Plan Your Promotions!

May is almost here, and soon we’ll be fully entrenched in spring. April’s showers are departing and it’s about time to enjoy all of May’s beautiful flowers. And as more plants start to bloom, so do the opportunities for you to throw a successful promotion!

Why not celebrate the season by having a general spring promotion on May Day or during Wildflower Week? From highlighters to stress balls, there are plenty of flower-themed products to cheer up even the drabbest offices.

Moms, police officers, and nurses all have big days this month, so consider showing your appreciation with personalized gifts like tote bags or elegant pens.

Let’s see what else May has in store for us (click to enlarge):

With Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day, May is definitely a great month for a military or Americana-themed promotion. USA key fobs are inexpensive and easy to transport, and non-woven camo tote bags make an impressive giveaway. Pass out one of these items at a picnic or community event to make a memorable statement.

We’re sure that everyone is kind to animals all year long. But kick up the love during Be Kind to Animals week. Pet owners are some of the most zealous customers, so showing a little love to Fido will have his owner showing some love back. Pet accessory bags or waste bag dispensers will be a huge hit this (or any) month!

School will soon be over for the summer, so celebrate National Teacher Day and thank the teachers in your district with a nice end-of-the-school-year gift. Fleece blankets or reusable water bottles will show your appreciation and reinforce school spirit all year long.

And speaking of summer, it’s just about time to start thinking about summertime promotions. It’s only a matter of time before June is upon us and we’re wondering if we should be handing out golf towels or golf balls at our charity golf events, or debating if one can really own enough promotional koozies. (By the way, the answer to that question is no.)

Interested in any of the items featured in our calendar? You can find them here: Solider Mad Cap Stress Ball, Compact First Aid Kit, and Fitness Bottle (21 Oz.).

I might be a tad biased but I LOVE Mothers day! Being able to spend it with my daughter and my mother make it pretty amazing and special for me! :-)

Hmm, I can’t say that I was totally surprised by your answer, Candice. :)

But Mother’s Day is definitely a great day.

I love May! I love the nice weather and the excitement that summer is coming very soon! Love it!! :)

Nice post, Mandy, very interesting facts and little holidays.

I like May because it’s the start of the summer movie blockbuster season. I’m not a big fan of hot weather.

But I know that I’m in the minority there.

Right on, Mandy. Memorial Day pretty much fires the starter pistol for all the summer “popcorn films.” And, well, warmer weather. I’m a fan of both.

Hooray for May! It’s probably my favorite month of the year (it being my birthday month and all :)). Maybe, since May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, I’ll actually motivate myself to start exercising more …

Also, though it’s not an official holiday, I tend to celebrate May for being the start of the summer movie season! Maybe a pair of 3D glasses would be an appropriate giveaway? Heck, Marvel’s already doing it … :)

I’m hoping to participate in National Physical Fitness and Sports Month by also participating in National Bike Month…but we’ll see.

If nothing else, we still have your birthday and the Avengers premiere. :)

I have a feeling that bug movie buffs would really like getting a pair of 3D glasses! Maybe they could be handed out with coupons that can only be read with the glasses?

Any month that has a federal holiday that I get off and paid is an awesomely, fantastic month in my book :D I hope the weather cooperates and I can get my bike out for the first time this year and celebrate ‘National Bike Month’ properly. Fingers crossed!

Love these posts, Mandy! Thanks for researching and compiling them every month!

My bike is out of the shed, but I haven’t ridden it yet this year. I really need to rectify that. Hooray for National Bike Month! (And a bigger hooray for Memorial Day!)

May is one of my favorite months. There is always so much going on, I love it! The weather is sooooo beautiful, I can’t wait :)

    • Mandy Kilinskis

There is definitely a lot to go in May – no doubt about that! Hopefully businesses will take advantage of so many events and use them to promote their brand!

  6. Amanda

May is a wonderful month! I get to start my garden! Yippee! Thanks for keeping us all up to date, Mandy! =)
