HOW MUCH CAFFEINE IS IN A TYPICAL CUP OF COFFEE?

Resource Center » How Much Caffeine is in a Typical Cup of Coffee?

Various facts about coffee and why promotional coffee mugs are a good choice.

A typical cup of coffee can have anywhere from 40 to over 100 milligrams of caffeine. Decaffeinated coffee has approximately two to five milligrams because it is impossible to completely remove all of the caffeine. Tea and soda, which are two other common sources of caffeine, both contain less in a typical serving than coffee does.

There are many reasons for the wide caffeine range in a regular cup of coffee. Dark coffees tend to have less caffeine than lighter coffees because more of the substance is lost during the roasting process. The place that the coffee beans are grown, along with other variables that occur during the growing process, also have an effect. Environmental and climate conditions, how long the plants are in the ground before being harvested, and the composition of the soil all contribute to a coffee's caffeine concentration. Instant coffee tends to have lower amounts of caffeine than other types. To get the most caffeine in a single cup, a person would need to use finely-ground beans and brew them in a high quality coffee machine using the drip method.

People go to a lot of effort to extract caffeine from coffee beans and other plant parts. An interesting fact about caffeine is that it occurs naturally in a number of different species of plants besides the familiar coffees and teas. There is also a small amount of caffeine in cocoa, which is used to make chocolate. Other plant species, like guarana, are used to make energy drinks. Caffeine acts as a pesticide in these plants and helps them survive by protecting the seeds and preventing bugs from eating them.

There is evidence that human use of caffeine may date all the way back to the Stone Age. People began drinking coffee in the ninth century. Oil is the only product that is traded more often than coffee beans. Caffeine is an addictive substance as well as a stimulant that increases alertness. When people drink caffeinated coffee in moderation, experts have found that it can improve physical and mental performance significantly. Overuse has the opposite effect, though!

Studies show that the typical coffee drinker in the United States drinks an average of 2.6 cups each day. Two-thirds of North Americans consume coffee, and this number is increasing every year. It's obvious that people love coffee, so it's a smart choice to customize coffee mugs as giveaway items and promotional products. Coffee mugs are items that people will not toss aside, and they have a great chance of being used on a daily basis for a long period of time!
