» What to Look for When Purchasing Golf Balls

Are you wondering what to look for when purchasing golf balls? Here's some information regarding the reasons why one golf ball is better than another.

There is a dizzying array of golf balls on the market, which makes it difficult for people to choose the best one for their needs. The tremendous number of available golf balls stands in stark contrast to the simple balls used by the nineteenth and twentieth-century pioneers of the game.

When you're purchasing golf balls, it's important to understand that there are different balls for different purposes and there are categorized options for beginners and experts.  Golfers can control almost any aspect of the golf ball's flight simply by choosing a specific type of ball. So, which ball should you buy? It depends on several factors, but you should consider a player's skill level and the intended purpose of the ball in relation to skill level. It's crucial to have an understanding of the types of modern golf balls before analyzing the reasons why one golf ball is better than another.

Golf balls are categorized into three basic groups. There are two-piece golf balls, which are good for beginners and players seeking to improve their control and distance through practice. There are also “hybrid” golf balls (also known as three-piece golf balls) made of three layers or three types of material, which offer more spin control and distance than the typical two-piece balls.  The other ball category features golf balls made from three or four layers or types of material, and they are good for experienced players who can control the path and distance of the ball by manipulating their stances, swing styles, and swing speeds. Professional golf balls usually fall into this category as well.

Choosing from these three ball categories is only one part of purchasing golf balls.  Two-layer balls are available for those seeking to purchase cheaper golf balls.  "Lake balls", which are retrieved from golf course water traps and then cleaned and sold in pro shops at a discounted rate, are an even cheaper option. Keep in mind that lake balls typically lose some of their intended performance the longer they are in the water; however, most pro shops fish them out of water traps daily to prevent this from happening. These balls are ideal for novices, infrequent golfers, or any player more concerned with practice than performance.

Golf balls called "X-outs", which either have cosmetic blemishes or are extras created by factory overproduction, are also available for purchase.  X-outs are practically identical in performance to any other new golf ball and many skilled golfers save money by using them for practice. The labels on these balls are crossed out by typed "X"s and sold in many pro shops and stores alongside regular golf balls and golf accessories.

Golfers can determine which ball they need by doing some basic research and examining their games.  There is a specific ball for each need, whether you seek more help with control over hooking and slicing or you want to to increase distance. Some balls cannot be used in professional tournaments because they offer maximum distance and are therefore too unpredictable, and some shops offer different ball colors for people with vision difficulties who have trouble seeing a white ball. There are unlimited sources of information to consult when choosing a golf ball, from pro shop staff and professional golfers to a vast number of paper and electronic publications, so do not feel overwhelmed.
