August 2012 Holidays, Observances, and Awareness Dates: Plan Your Promotions!

We don’t have a major holiday to celebrate in August, but you can still have an amazing promotion this month. If you haven’t thrown a company picnic or other outdoor event, this is the last month to do so before it cools down again.

Even though the Olympics start on July 27th, the majority of the games take place during August. Celebrate the event with American-made products or by organizing an event with other local business owners to cheer on your hometown hero and/or Team USA.

August also means a return to school (sorry, kids), but you can welcome back your teachers and staff with personalized gifts to energize your employees and start the year off on the right foot.

Let’s see what August has in store for us (click to enlarge):

August 2012 Holidays, Observances, Awareness Dates

National Golf Month? That’s the only reason you need to throw a corporate outing or fundraising event on the links. Bring along some logo divot tools, tees, and towels for use on the course, and some umbrellas both the players and onlookers.

But there are plenty of other ways to get involved with your community this month!

Dollar Day might celebrate the introduction of the monetary system of the United States, but you can certainly tailor any promotion around a dollar. Discount some of your less expensive items to a dollar outright, or offer the deal if a customer buys another item at full price. Regardless of the deal, make sure you toss in a personalized pen with each sale.

Or team up with home associations on National Garage Sale Day! If your community throws a neighborhood-wide garage sale, consider providing some water and light refreshments. Deal hunters will stay longer and your neighbors will love you for it. Make sure that you have plenty of business cards and promotional items to hand out. Reusable tote bags would also be a huge hit with the bargain shoppers!

And speaking of reusable tote bags, those would also make a great giveaway during National Farmers’ Market Week. If a customer spends a certain dollar amount, offer them a complimentary tote bag to take home their purchase. You can bet they’ll remember you the next time they hit the market!

Safety is also a huge focus in August. This is a great opportunity for the local police or fire department to attend community events and pass out magnets printed with safety information. Park districts and doctor’s offices can equip teams, parents, and patients with first aid kits just in case an accident does happen.

Don’t let August slip by! Without a major holiday, you can bet that other businesses won’t be throwing as many promotions, so this is your chance to easily cut through the competition.

I love the idea of Dollar Day. It’s one of those holidays that absolutely any industry can build a promotion around. With school physicals approaching, Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month is a fantastic way for both healthcare facilities and schools to improve public health.

    • Mandy Kilinskis

Dollar Day is definitely a great holiday with tons of opportunities!

Buy a necklace full price, get a bracelet for a dollar; open a checking account for only a dollar; shipping for only a dollar–the opportunities are limitless!

      • Amanda

Dollar Day sounds like a great way for businesses to gain sales!!

  2. Eric

National S’mores Day? Wouldn’t that also have to include “Take A Camping Trip Day,” or “Buy A Fire Pit Day?” Too much involved, there…that’s why I’m looking forward to August 15th: National Relaxation Day. 🙂

    • Mandy Kilinskis

You could just make them in the microwave. It’s not as authentic, but it’s only about fifteen seconds of work. 😉

      • Eric

I forget which comedian it is, but he’s a joke in his routine about the fact pop-tarts actually come with microwave oven cooking instructions…in case the old-fashioned toaster is holding your schedule back. 🙂

  3. Jenna Markowski

I can absolutely get behind Watermelon Day and S’mores Day, and I would certainly appreciate it if the brands I like did the same! National Safe at Home Week, Family Fun Month, and National Golf Month seem like great opportunities for companies to get on the promo product bandwagon and hold a promotion when other brands think August is their month off. Another one to add to this list is August 20th — MY BIRTHDAY! 🙂

    Nice round-up, Mandy!

    • Mandy Kilinskis

Thanks, Jenna! And happy early birthday! 🙂

Companies and brands really should jump on having some kind of golf-related promotion in August. Not only because it’s National Golf Month, but also because golf fans are probably itching to get out and play before it’s gets too cool.

  4. Rachel

International Left-Handers Day, heck yeah! Good to know we get at least one day out of the year to be proud. 🙂

All your suggestions this month are excellent, Mandy — seems like there are tons of opportunities to promote your business this month, even without any major holidays.

    • Mandy Kilinskis

It seems that August is definitely what you make it. Customers don’t ever mind getting a deal or freebie, so you might as well do it while other businesses aren’t!

And hooray for the left-handers! Though note that on the 14th, it’s right back to the right-handers. 😉

“National Golf Month” is an excellent excuse for golfing places to run promotions and raise their revenue. Mini golf places can run discounted games on weeknights and driving ranges can offer discounted buckets of balls during the slow times of the days (anytime after 10 AM and I’m sure that beating sun drives away a few potential customers 😉 ). Oooh, oooh! Or stores could give away a free game of golf as a contest to drive in traffic to their location. My head is spinning from so many possibilities!

Love these posts, Mandy! Thanks for compiling them!

    • Mandy Kilinskis

Oh man, I hope that course owners read your comment, Amy! You’ve just given them a slew of ideas. They could really step it up on Dollar Day: buy one bucket of balls, get another for a dollar!

And thank you! They’re definitely fun to write each month! 😀

  6. Amanda

Yay for Watermelon Day!! **I fondly remember our watermelon celebration last year. Watermelon shark for all!!!** =)

  7. Jill Tooley

Man, I’m so glad I don’t have to experience the “back-to-school blues” again! 😉

Nice rundown. National Garage Sale Day sounds fun, actually! Maybe I’ll find some more cool junk for my house.
