Branding Beat - Cut Through the Noise

Walmart Has Earned My Loyalty, but Can You Do the Same?

I love having selection and variety in my life—especially when it comes to shopping. As you all know by now, I’m pretty cheap and I don’t shop a lot. But I actually do like to shop for things my family needs, like household items and groceries. One of my biggest pet peeves (and I don’t have many!) is going to a store and feeling like I’m not being offered enough of a selection. This has happened to me countless times and I hate it, so I decided a while back that I am not putting myself through that anymore. I’ve found the solution and am now loyal to one particular store: Walmart.

I know, Walmart is a controversial store. People either love it or hate it. But for me, it’s all love for this big blue chain store, and I’ll tell you why!

I LOVE being able to carefully choose the products I buy from week to week, and I find Walmart to have the best of all that I look for—location, selection, and price.

Location: According to a recent study, 90% of Americans live within 15 miles of a Walmart—and thank goodness that includes me. I am about 4 miles from our Super Walmart and I am thrilled about that! I can go there whenever I need something and not have to drive very far. Plus, it’s very close to a lot of other retail stores, so it’s even more convenient.

It's all about the selection!

It’s all about the selection!

Selection: Another thing I love about this business is their selection. I get to choose what brand, color, size, flavor, or scent I want to buy something in. I refuse to choose from the two brands I dislike and then have to pay more for it, from here on out. Our local, smaller stores leave me wanting more and I hate that. Every time I try to give another store a chance, I end up regretting it later. I think: “Store ABC will be fine, I’ll just run in and grab the few items I need, and I’ll be glad that I didn’t drive another 2 miles to get to Walmart.” Nope. Never happens that way. I always, always regret it unless I go there.

Price: To top it all off—Walmart’s prices are amazing! They beat out all other stores in our area for just about every item I buy. And now, they will even match other stores’ prices and will take competitor coupons. Yeah, for a “couponer” like me, that’s heavenly to my ears! I can now bring in all coupons and sale ads and get the absolute best price on everything I buy. Yes!

I love that I can enter a Walmart and get everything I need at a great price. I can pick up a package of socks, laundry detergent, all of our groceries, dog food, that new DVD we’ve been thinking about buying, a prescription, light bulbs, makeup, and on and on. This is why I love the store. I can get every product I want, in the size and scent I like, and never leave feeling like I should have gone somewhere else. Never.

To me, Walmart is like a good friend that’s always there for you. Our local store is open 24 hours a day, and has recently been remodeled—bonus!

For businesses to succeed, and gain loyal customers, they should think about embodying the same qualities Walmart has:

  1. Good selection of products/services that prove valuable to consumers
  2. A special something that draws in new customers and keeps old customers loyal
  3. Prices people view as a good value
  4. Good customer service and care

What businesses are you loyal to and why? Do you share my love for Walmart? What can other businesses learn from this chain store?

Nice post, Amanda. It’s easy to see why you like Walmart as much as you do – it’s the best choice for you on so many levels! It seems to be a “one-stop shop” for you that other stores can’t touch. When you need a wide variety of things and you’re limited on time, it’s not practical to hop around to 4 different stores to find everything you need. And why should you have to when everything is under one roof?

I don’t personally shop at Walmart (it’s been about 2 years since my last trip there – I get most of my shopping done at Aldi or Woodmans) but I can definitely understand the convenience factors you mentioned. Location, selection, and price are all vital things to base your business model around! 🙂

Aldi is a great store for the things they have, but since they have a limited selection, I find myself going to Walmart more often–but Aldi is still a great store! I’ve been to Woodman’s once, and we loved it! But we haven’t been back….it’s pretty out of the way for us–at least 30 mins to get to one in either direction. But I did like their prices and selection–I’m sure I’ll go back there sometime. =)

These are great points for any business to consider! While they might not be able to have a store within 15 miles of 90% of Americans, they should at least have a well-designed online store that can ship to everywhere in the US!

I’m not a Walmart shopper myself, but not for the reasons you listed. When factoring in location, selection, and price, there isn’t much competition.

    • Tony Promo

There isn’t competition because it’s literally part of their business model to put local mom-and-pop’s out of business. In fact, they actually have people who gauge the amount of time it will take before the surrounding local businesses go out of business.

    • Amanda

Yeah, you’re right Mandy. Having a store that close to so many of us is a really tough one to beat–but a great online store can be just as good. Good point! =)

  3. Jen

Amanda, I also really like Walmart. I wouldn’t say I love it, but they usually have everything I need (and things I don’t need) and it’s so convenient. Great Post! 🙂

    • Amanda

Thanks Jen! I am a Walmart lover for sure. Yay for Walmart! Yeah, they have so many products—it’s wonderful!

I totally understand where you’re coming from here, Amanda. Like you, I appreciate having a convenient shopping center close by, and since my local Meijer is only a minute or two from my apartment, I generally shop there. The great thing about Meijer is that their prices are pretty fantastic! All things considered, Meijer is probably a close second to Wal-Mart as far as prices go. I’ll sacrifice the few cents I’d save at Wal-Mart for the convenience of driving only a couple minutes to do my shopping.

    • Amanda

Meijer is a nice store too Joe. I’ve only been to in that store once, since there isn’t one anywhere close to our house–but I can see how that would be a great store to do a lot of shopping at. =)

I hear all these people whining about Walmart. All I have to say to them is if they can step up and do as good a job or better than Walmart, come on and show us your stuff. Until then, I don’t give 2 shits what they have to say!
