CBS Sports Ruined the NCAA Bracket
About half way through the first day of the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament, I took my eye off my bracket for one second, and a friend had marked games as if it were his. Being that I’m a bit “OCD” when It comes to my sheet, I decided to print out a new one.
Now, I’m not sure if I searched differently, or if I just forgot where the last one I printed out was, but my search landed me on this CBS sports page for a printable bracket. Notice the GIANT ads? It’s hard not to. Being that I’m in marketing myself, I decided I didn’t care and printed the sheet anyway. When the printer spit it out (ads and all), I realized, then, that this printout just wasn’t going to work. With almost 50% ads, 32 teams stacked on top of each other in only about 4” of space. Not only was it tough to read, but impossible to write on. In other words: useless.
To CBS Sports and any other “media” company that is looking for new places to sell advertising:
Don’t be greedy. If you sacrifice the look, feel and (for crying out loud) usability of your medium, then you’re going to lose viewers/readers/users. Community based websites, especially:
To advertisers who think bigger is always better:
Sure I notice your ads, but they also annoy me, inconvenience me, and generally anger me. And I work in marketing. You don’t want to be associated with that frustration, trust me. Keep it classy, make it about the message, not the size, otherwise you look like you’re crying for attention.
Don’t get me wrong, I still want to see Clash of the Titans, but now, when I see it, it will remind me of the time I had wasted by greedy marketers. Shame on you CBS, and shame on you Clash of the Titans!
