How Your Favorite Facebook Games are Using Promo Items as Rewards

There are three overwhelmingly-popular Facebook games that seem to be unavoidable in news feeds these days: FarmVille, Mafia Wars, and YoVille. I know that many of my virtual friends are addicted to at least one of those games, and now Zynga (the company behind the games) is launching a promotional campaign that uses sweet promo items as customer/fan rewards!

How is Zynga doing this? First of all, they are offering their exclusive FarmVille, Mafia Wars, and YoVille products at participating 7-Eleven stores; people can buy specially-marked Slurpee cups, coffee drinks, bottled water, and more in order to obtain a code which they can then redeem online in the corresponding game. This six-week-long promotion started on June 1st, so now is your chance to participate!

I have to say, I’m a HUGE fan of this promotion…and I don’t even play any of the games being marketed. I think that players are going to be super-psyched about this! Zynga and 7-Eleven have come together to offer exclusive rewards to existing players, but I have a feeling that this promotion will draw a significant number of NEW players as well because they’d be receiving tons of free in-game bonuses. While I was pumping gas yesterday at my local 7-Eleven, I noticed that each pump had a sign above it in order to advertise this promotion; if I had gone in and purchased a Slurpee or a bottle of water that had a code on it, then I probably would have gone online to redeem it even though I don’t currently play any Facebook games. After all…why not?

Even if you are completely against Facebook games, you have to admit that everyone loves a “treasure hunt” like this one! For example, maybe the 7-Eleven store down the street doesn’t have every FarmVille product you need, so then you’ll have to drive further to find a store that does…some people may hate traveling to find what they want, but I think it’s an adventure.

Plus, in addition to giving people what they want with the thrill of the hunt and with the products themselves, Zynga is using 7-Eleven’s promo items like Slurpee cups and candy to drive traffic to their website and games (which benefits them). Because each FarmVille, Mafia Wars, and YoVille item has a special code on it, customers will have to take it home and pull up the game in order to redeem the exclusive prize that goes along with the product.
