May 2016 Holidays, Observances, and Awareness Dates: Plan Your Promotions!
Well, the calendar says it’s spring, but it sure isn’t acting like it around the Chicagoland area. Cold, windy, and snowy. Sounds more like the middle of January than a spring day. Believe it or not, May 2016 is just around the corner, and in a few short weeks, the unofficial beginning of summer will be here!
I’m definitely ready for the warmer weather so I can officially put my winter coat away for at least a few consecutive months. But we’ve got to get through the next month and a half before we can celebrate the beginning of flip flops and shorts.
That’s enough wishing about summer; we’re here to talk about all the incredible holidays, observances, and awareness dates coming up in May. If you’re looking for some inspiration for your next marketing giveaway, check out the calendar below for a ton of ideas!
Right off the bat we get to celebrate teachers on May 3 with Teacher Appreciation Day. When May arrives, the school year is winding down, and with every passing moment students’ attention spans decrease significantly. Teachers deserve way more than one day of appreciation, but you can use this day to show how grateful you are for their dedication by giving them custom chocolate. If you hold annual year-end events, you can use that opportunity to recognize the outstanding educators with engraved awards.
Speaking of people we appreciate, Mother’s Day falls on May 8. Mom not only helped raise us, but she also fills the roles of chef, doctor, and teacher all in one. She does it all selflessly and a lot of the time without recognition. Get Mom a personalized picture frame or, better yet, a custom spa kit to really relax. You know she deserves it.
Memorial Day falls on May 30 this year, and the day serves as a reminder of all the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country. Your community might hold a parade to honor these fallen heroes, which gives you an opportunity to hand out little tokens like a patriotic stress ball or pencil as a small gesture to show your support for everyone in a military uniform.
Of course, Memorial Day weekend usually serves as the unofficial start to summer. And that means seeing more people outside enjoying the (hopefully) warmer weather and even breaking out their bicycles for the first time this year. National Bike Month falls in May, so if you’re looking to promote bike safety check, out a bike light. If you’re sponsoring a team for a long-distance bike ride the riders will need promotional water bottles that can easily fit on their bikes. National Running and Fitness Week is May 22 – 28, so if riding a bike isn’t your flavor, you can hand out shoe lights or personalized shaker cups.
That’s just a snapshot of all the different ways to promote your business during the month. Be sure to check out the calendar to get even more ideas!
