Which Side of an Ice Scraper Do You Use?

You’ll use both sides of an ice scraper at some point. The ridges are meant to be used for large chunks or thick ice sheets. Once the ice is in smaller pieces, you can use the other side or the snow brush to wipe it off and onto the ground.

How to Remove Snow & Ice From Your Car

A windshield scraper with a built-in snow brush is the best way to remove ice from your car. Be gentle while chipping at the ice and use a soft cloth after to get rid of any remaining moisture.

Follow these tips when using an ice scraper:

Do

  • Raise your windshield wipers if your car is going to be parked outside during the winter. This makes it easy to get underneath when using the ice scraper.
  • Start your car and make sure your defroster is on before you start chipping at the ice.
  • Go from the top of the windshield/windows and work your way down.
  • Press gently while at the same time being firm enough to remove the ice. You don’t have to press down too hard.
  • Keep a backup windshield scraper in your car or trunk.
  • Bundle up before you start scraping the ice or snow from your car. You should wear a warm jacket, gloves, boots, and a beanie hat.

Don’t

  • Brush all the snow or ice from your car into a neighboring car’s parking space. That’s just rude!
  • Use the ridged side of the scraper to remove ice from your hood, doors, roof, or an other part of the car’s body. It may cause scratches.
  • Start your windshield wipers while using your car scraper. The frozen ice can damage the rubber or the motor.
  • Pour hot water or salt over your windshield or windows to remove the ice.
  • Use a hair dryer or propane torch to help remove the ice. This can cause damage to the windshield’s tint and/or seals.
  • Tap the ice to break it up. If you are too forceful, you might accidentally break your windshield.
  • Drive your car if there’s too much ice or snow on your windshield. It’s not safe for you or other drivers and pedestrians.

Be mindful that you’re using your ice scraper correctly so you don’t damage your vehicle. And remember to always drive with a clear windshield in the winter!

Can an Ice Scraper Damage Your Windshield?

A plastic ice scraper is not likely to damage your car windshield or windows unless you’re super aggressive. Always apply a gentle touch, and avoid using the ridged side to remove the ice on your car doors or hood as it could chip the paint.

Maybe you’re driving a fancy Porsche or Lamborghini and don’t want to risk using a windshield ice scraper. In that case, try using a microfiber cloth or foam snow brush instead.

What Makes a Good Ice Scraper?

The best ice scrapers are made from plastic and have long handles and soft-bristle brushes. You can use the ridged side to chisel at the ice on your windows and the brush to wipe the snow from your hood and roof.

Are you buying a new ice scraper? Look for all of the following:

Lightweight

Why is an Ice Scraper Important?

Why is an Ice Scraper Important?

Why is an Ice Scraper Important?

An ice scraper helps increase visibility on snowy days. Ultimately, this makes the winter roads safer for you and other drivers and pedestrians.

Heavy snow builds up on top of your car, and the more weight, the harder it has to work. This not only causes you to burn gas quickly, but it also adds stress to your suspension, brakes, and tires. An ice scraper can be used to brush the mound off your car before you hit the road, saving you money in the long run.
