How to Use Stencils to Make a Jack O' Lantern

You don't have to be an artist to create amazing Halloween pumpkins. All you need is a few free stencils and the right tools for the job.

What you'll need:

  • Pumpkin carving templates (download yours for free above)
  • Small to medium-sized pumpkins
  • Big spoon
  • Carving knives
  • Tape
  • Push pins
  • Sharpie (optional)

1. Cut around the stem of the pumpkin to remove it.

2. Use a big spoon to scoop out all the seeds and gunk inside the pumpkin, aka "the guts."

4. Tape the paper to your pumpkin.

5. Push the pins in around the design, so you make tiny holes that you can easily follow for carving. You can also trace the design with a Sharpie.

6. Start carving the sections that are marked by the pins or Sharpie. You might want to change up the size of the knife you're using, depending on what you're carving.

How to Get Your Pumpkins to Last Longer on Halloween

You can make your pumpkins last longer on Halloween by dunking them for 2 minutes in a bucket of water mixed with 3 teaspoons of bleach. This will keep your carved pumpkins from rotting for up to 10 days!
