As the crow flies. What a weird saying. It means the distance between two points if you're traveling in a straight line (as opposed to along twisting roads or trails). The idea is that birds always travel in straight lines towards their destinations and never stop to investigate shiny objects, bird feeders, or freshly-washed cars. But why crows, specifically? Why not "as the bird flies?" Is there something particularly straight-flying about crows, as opposed to more easily-distracted birds? Or why not just say, "in a straight line?"
That mystery notwithstanding, there's a good chance that you will NOT be traveling to any destination as the crow, raven, or magpie flies. No, you'll probably be traveling as the penguin or ostrich flies, which is to say, by land. So just taking a ruler to a map and converting the inches to the map's conversions rate won't give you an accurate idea of how far you'll actually be traveling.
