Headaches, lethargy, anxiety, panic attacks—stress in the workplace can be a real killer! Stress is an ongoing issue in just about every industry, but it is especially noticeable in the customer service industry. Those who are employed in the field of customer service know how real stress can be, and many don't realize it before they enter the career field.
What is it about the workplace that causes stress? The answer is subjective. Stress can vary from a strong desire to succeed to tough management to any answer in between. Some people are naturally prone to stress and others are not. For employees of the customer service industry, the culprit can be any combination of stress from customers or from the work environment. At times, stress builds up until it feels like too much to bear.
If you are a customer service representative and find that stress is getting to you more than usual, make use of a few of these stress relief techniques to help relieve the tension.
Get a Stress Ball
A stress ball is a small ball with a squishy foam-like substance inside of it. When pressed or rolled in the hand, it is said to help relieve some of the tension that has built up. These can be purchased just about anywhere, and your company might even have a few on hand as promotional items or incentives; it can’t hurt to check. Keep one of these handy for those times when you think you may not be able to hold down the frustration building inside of you. It might surprise you just how useful such a little ball can be for your workplace anxiety!
Learn to Breathe
It sounds obvious and silly, but proper breathing is one of the most effective stress relief methods. When you feel stress emerging, just inhale and exhale a few times—it makes a huge difference when it comes to the amount of tension you feel at work! When the boss is nagging you, take a few deep breaths. When the customer has called back with the same issue for the third time, take a few deep breaths. When you haven’t hit your quota, take a few deep breaths. Make breathing exercises a habit and watch the stress melt away.
Take Up Lunchtime Exercise
Exercise is another great way to relieve stress. Whether you choose to walk, to do some leg lifts, to do a quick aerobic workout, or to take a jog, it's smart to make use of exercise in relieving stress (and perhaps lose a few pounds along the way). Try squeezing an exercise routine into your lunch hour! This will give you something to look forward to and help you relieve stress and tension that builds up during the grueling work day.
Workplace stress is no joke. Stress can cause strokes, heart attacks, high blood pressure, and many other medical conditions that could be avoided with a few simple stress management techniques. Customer service is a tough field, and sometimes stress just can’t be avoided. Ward off what you can with a few of these techniques and start feeling better about your day!
