It’s pretty difficult to resist an adorable dog. These faithful friends come up to greet you at the front door, cuddle with you on the couch, and take long walks with you in the evening.

“When you look at a dog, you can sometimes see the life in their eyes. We try to help as many find a home as we can.” -Dawn Joy, volunteer at Homeward Bound Schnauzer Rescue

Finding a Way Home

Homeward Bound Schnauzer Rescue (HBSR), a Maryland-based foster, is the perfect candidate for Give Your Brand a Hand. Dawn Joy and colleagues started HBSR in 2016 with the goal of helping wayward schnauzers find a loving home. Now they are 72 volunteers strong and ready to do whatever it takes to continue supporting schnauzers in the mid-Atlantic area.

Of course, this quest isn’t always easy and sometimes requires the team to literally go the distance in cross-country rescue pursuits. It’s not uncommon for them to hop in the car and travel five plus hours to pick up dogs from shelters. After all that driving, they get in the car again to drop the dogs off at their new foster home.

All this effort is worth it in the end to ensure these lovable canines have a roof over their heads. To date, more than 140 schnauzers have been rescued thanks to the organization!

What Are Schnauzers?

If you’re anything like me, then you’re probably not too familiar with schnauzers. However, after hearing Dawn’s story I was inspired to look more into this fascinating breed.

Below you’ll find everything you need to know about the lovable schnauzer!

With their cute little beard and eyebrows, you might think of a wise sage rather than a cuddly friend. However, schnauzers are loyal, lovable, and extremely trainable dogs. That’s why it’s so important for Homeward Bound Schnauzer Rescue to keep as many out of shelters as possible.

A Home for Every Dog

Perhaps the most notable part about Homeward Bound Schnauzer Rescue is they don’t discriminate or take in only energetic puppies. Any schnauzer, regardless of age or health, is welcomed by their organization with open arms. This is what led them to take in a 17-year-old dog that was both deaf and blind. Through their “Fospice” program, the dog was able to live out the remainder of his life in a loving home.

There is also the story of the Virginia Three, a trio of miniature schnauzers who were in desperate need of medical care. They were in such bad shape, the HBSR team wasn’t sure whether or not they would survive the long journey to the vet’s office.

However, after hard work from the vet, all three dogs were able to be stabilized, including Gretchen (pictured here), a 14-year-old dog with a cancerous tumor. This lovable dog was able to find a loving foster, be nursed back to health, and live close to another year. During that time, she was playful, energetic, and willing to wear Halloween costumes without any complaint! It’s all thanks to Homeward Bound Rescue Shelter’s unwavering dedication to schnauzers who need a home.

Going Home in a Tote

There are many more schnauzers out there to be rescued, which is why Homeward Bound Schnauzer Rescue needs to raise awareness. Many advertising methods are expensive, especially for a non-profit like HBSR which is ran by a team of volunteers with full-time jobs.

That’s why the organization is over the moon about their promotional tote bags and cute little fire hydrant bag holders. The tote bags will hold all information a foster family needs when caring for a dog, including the paperwork, leash, toys, and other items. The foster families can then use these bags for any other need, like grocery shopping, going to the beach, or taking a trip to the park with their new schnauzer friend!
